Wrestling

Your Support Matters

Our primary goal for our varsity athletes is to provide an outstanding student experience that allows them to become not only the best students and athletes but also the greatest possible people they can be. We look to maintain an inclusive program and foster a habit of perseverance in search of success be it on the mat, in the classroom or in the community.

Our hope is that our young athletes continue to demonstrate integrity, respect and dedication as they become the leaders of tomorrow.

OUA Varsity teams at the University of Guelph receive base funding from the Department of Athletics that cover costs such as league fees, officiating and some travel. We rely on student-athlete fees and fundraising to meet the rest of our program needs. To minimize the financial burden on our student-athletes, Men’s and Women’s Wrestling have set a goal to raise $12,000 annually to offset costs that are essential to the success of our program.

Make an Impact

Our varsity program is growing, and continuously improving. In order to provide the athletes with the best opportunity, we require more funding. This funding will be used for:

  • Travelling expenses to high-level exhibition competitions ($8000)
  • Access to supplementary anaerobic exercise throughout the season and for access to supplementary summer weight-lifting programs ($2000)
  • Training supplies such as crash mats, training dummies, ladders, etc. ($2000)

About Wrestling

The Men’s and Women’s wrestling teams have an impressive history as one of the oldest sports at the University of Guelph. The Gryphons started their legacy by capturing an OUAA title and in the following year, became CIAU Champions. Since then the Gryphons have continued their impressive performances and added Women’s Wrestling. The program has helped develop numerous Team Canada national team members and Olympians.

Each year our team aims to build on the previous year’s performance. Our goal is to have athletes qualify for the USport Championship by placing top 4 at the OUA Championship. We strive to qualify more athletes to National team programming through impressive performances at the National Championship. This year our goal is to have each member representing our team at the 2024 OUA championship at Algoma University qualify for the USport Championship.
